Sometimes it’s a slog to write a scene, and sometimes a poem just feels flat. Tuning our ears to language can often break us out of old ruts and help us find new possibilities in our writing. In this free online workshop with Rachel Richardson, we’ll look closely at the sound of the language we’re using, and the musical and rhythmic devices we can lean into to enliven our prose and poetry, amplify meaning, even find where we need to go. We’ll try a few techniques together and you’ll leave with several more in your toolbox.

She is co-founder of the Berkeley literary center Left Margin LIT and serves as Poetry Advisor for the Bay Area Book Festival.
